The Night Vision System (NIVIS) is primarily intended as a visual aid for people who require improved vision at night or in low visibility conditions.
NIVIS-2 can help persons with impaired night vision i.e. night blindness to orient themselves and move independently in twilight or at night.
The NIVIS-2 opto-electronic glasses have the following features:
- A light sensitive CCD micro camera which produces a crisp and clear image, even in twilight.
- An additional infrared beam (invisible) allowing the user to see even in total darkness.
This IR supply can be switched on by the user if required
- Each eye has its own LCD micro-display where the images are projected.

There are many uses for these night vision glasses, ideal for security  when it is possible to walk around an entire building in total darkness, to increase the range you could also use a powerbeam IR torch. (see below)

3.0 Description
3.1 Overview
NIVIS-2 (Night Vision System) is intended primarily as a visual aid for
people who require improved vision in twilight and at night or in low visibi-
lity conditions. Upon appropriate examination by an ophtalmologist, NIVIS-2
can be a useful visual aid for persons who suffer from impaired night vision
(Night Blindness). NIVIS-2 allows such persons to orient themselves and
move independently in low visibility
conditions.
NIVIS-2 consists of a spectacle unit
(Glasses) connected by cable to a
power and control unit. The system includes an AC/DC
adapter for recharging the batteries.
A micro-camera located in the spectacle frame
unit is used to record images.
These images are then projected on
two micro-displays in the spectacles,
which can be seen by the user
through display optics. Contrast and
brightness can be manually adjusted
on the power and control unit.
If required, the glasses can provide
additional illumination of the scene by
an infrared (IR) light source located in
the frame of the glasses. This addi-
tional illumination is detected by the
camera, but is not visible to the naked
eye.
An additional infrared torch can be used with the
unit for further illumination of the environment.
An external video source can also be connected to the power and control
unit so that NIVIS-2 can be used as display monitor for electronic reading.
Batteries and charger are contained in the power and control unit, and
must be connected through the 12V AC/DC transformer (supplied) to any AC
plug (110V - 240V). Complete charging takes around 50 min.
The control panel on the power and control unit have following knobs,
switches and sockets.
OFF/ON switch for power to NIVIS-2
When the provided video cable is plugged into the Video socket, the image
source from the glasses camera is automatically switched to external video
input
3.2 Glasses

The glasses consist of a frame which accommodates a micro camera, two
flat micro displays, internal electronics, and the infrared light source. The
recorded images are projected on two micro-displays and seen by the user
through display optics.
The visor located in front of the glasses acts as an anti-glare filter.

The glasses are worn like normal glasses and are held in place by the ear-
pieces and the nosepiece. An elastic band connects both earpieces and is
worn around the back of the head, further securing the glasses. The nose-
piece and earpieces are removable attachments allowing for individual opti-
mal adaptation of the glasses.
The cable link is fixed to the spectacle part and must be plugged into power
and control unit.
3.3 Power and control unit

3.3.1 Overview
The Power supply unit comprises:

 Power supply pack

 Battery (not removable)

control panels with sockets, knobs and switches

 carrying clip
3.3.2 Power Supply
The system uses an internal rechargeable nickel-metal-hydride (Ni-MH)
power supply pack1;12V/1.2Ah) and an AC/DC 12V adapter with cable and
a connection plug.
The battery can be completely
recharged from empty in about 50
minutes using the adapter provided.

3.3.3 Power and control unit
The power and control unit is inside a plastic casing which has a removable
clip allowing it to be worn on the belt.
4.0 Operating instructions for NIVIS-2
4.1 Switching on and use

1. For information on charging batteries see

Chapter 7 (Power supply),
2. Plug the connector of the glass cable into the

Glasses socket located on the power and

control unit, ensuring it is fully inserted.

Handle it with care to avoid twisting the pins. Then screw the outer ring

to secure the plug.
3. Switch the appliance on using the ON/OFF switch. The green LED light

(Power) will light up on the front panel.

4.2 Switching off the glasses

1. To turn the appliance off, use the OFF/ON ^y OFF 'I ON

switch. The associated green LED light will go

out.

2. Remove the plug, first loosening the swivel cap by turning it counter-

clockwise. Then pull the plug from the socket.
3. To protect the battery pack against excessive discharge, the appliance

should always be switched off when not in use.
4. When not in use for longer periods the unit should be kept in its

transportation case.

13
5.0 Adapting to individual user
5.1 Optical adjustment for the individual user
All optical adjustments for individual users should be carried out by an
ophtalmologist or optician.
The following points must be taken into account:
1. Prior to carrying out the adjustment, the glasses and the battery unit

must be connected and switched on. Images must be visible on both left

and right displays.
2. The correct height is obtained by adjusting the nosepiece. To do so,

loosen the screws on the housing of the glasses. With the user wearing

the glasses, adjust the nosepiece height until the displays are optimally

centered to the optic axes of the eyes. Then retighten the screws care-

fully.
3. The earpieces are fixed to the frame of the glasses by small screws and

can be adapted individually for each user by an optician.
4. To optimize the position of the two displays so that both images are seen

as a single visual field, carefully turn with the provided small screwdriver

the two prismatic lenses located near the viewer side of the displays. The

thickest side of the prismatic lenses are identified by a small red dot. This

adjustment compensates for any individual differences in the optic axes.

This adjustment should be performed by the optician only once, before

the glasses are worn for the first time.

5. The displays are focused to infinity, to allow people with normal vision to

use them without straining their eyes. Consequently there may be some

accommodation problems in case of myopia and astigmatism.

Wearing additional correcting glasses together with the NIVIS-2 glasses is

uncomfortable and means additional weight. We therefore recommend

that corrective lenses be placed into the attachments located behind the

two displays.

These corrective lenses must be made and put into place by an optician.

In this case, the optimal adaptation of the NIVIS-2 glasses should be

carried out after the corrective lenses have been inserted.
5.2 Brightness and contrast
The user can manually adjust 3 contrast and -fr brightness with the two
knobs located on the top panel of the battery unit.
The unit has no energy saving mode and it is recommended to switch
OFF the system when not in use.
The switch must be in position OFF when the cable for the glasses is to
be connected or disconnected.
7.0 Power supply
7.1 General
Power supply to the appliance is supplied by internal rechargeable Ni-MH-
batteries, A 12V AC/DC adapter is supplied allowing to recharge completely
the batteries in 50 minutes.
8.0 Maintenance and Cleaning Instructions
To clean the glasses and power and control unit, use a damp cloth. A

light rinsing agent may be added to the water. Do not use any deter-

gents!
To clean the optical parts of the glasses (LCD's, camera lens etc.), use a

dry, clean cloth (a cleaning cloth for this purpose is provided with the

NIVIS-2 kit).
